Building Practical Digital Forensics & DFIR Solutions

Squirrel Forensics was founded by digital forensics and cybersecurity professionals with a shared goal: making digital investigations more accessible, affordable and practical.

We have developed The Acorn, a portable digital forensics and incident response platform that combines open-source investigation tools, evidence protection controls and investigator-focused workflows within a single Linux-based environment.

Our focus is not on competing with large enterprise forensic suites. Instead, we provide a flexible and cost-effective platform that supports investigators, educators, students, incident responders and technical teams.

Why We Built The Acorn

Through years of working with forensic investigators, law enforcement agencies, corporate investigation teams and training providers, we repeatedly saw the same challenge:

Professional forensic solutions were often expensive, difficult to access and beyond the budgets of smaller organisations.

The Acorn was developed to provide a practical alternative, combining proven open-source technologies with evidence protection controls, guided workflows and a portable deployment model.

Our Core Principles

Practical Investigation Workflows

Supporting real-world investigations rather than theoretical demonstrations.

Evidence Protection

Helping investigators preserve evidential integrity throughout an examination.

Open-Source Innovation

Building on trusted open-source forensic technologies.

Education & Community

Supporting students, universities and the wider digital forensics community.

Supporting the Digital Forensics Community

Squirrel Forensics actively supports investigators, educators and students through documentation, investigation workflows, training resources and community collaboration.

The Investigators Hub, currently under development, will provide access to practical guides, discussion forums, workflows and learning resources designed to support digital investigations.
